Giuliana Rancic (E! News), Jake Pavelka (The Bachelor), and Kelly Bensimon (The Real Houswives of New York) are all running the Rock ‘N’ Roll Chicago Half Marathon on Sunday.  If they can run a half you can too.  Last year Kara Goucher ran it in 1:08:05 and beat everyone, even the guys!

Who, who who, and who? Now if a real celebrity like Pauly Shore was running it that would be worth reporting!

  2. Kara ran a good race but would not have beaten Ryan Hall. I agree with Robert. Who cares about these reality stars. John Wayne would have blasted by them if he was around.

  3.  Misty says:

Pauly Shore & John Wayne??? Really guys!
    Go Kara Go!!!

The Houston marathon and half marathon has switched over to the lottery system for entry. Registration opens tomorrow.  The winners will be chosen August 17th (hopefully they will take into consideration my sub-5 hour marathon record and just go ahead and register me for an elite corral). There will be 11,000 half marathoners and 11,000 full marathoners and the race is January 30th.  If you really, really want to run this race you can donate $350 to one of their charities for guaranteed entry.  And if you’re obsessed with running with and meeting elite runners than you can buy your way in with a VIP package, I would not judge you.

Bunch of crazy awesome people running this morning!

I am blogging from Albany, Georgia (home of the Snickers Marathon Energy Bar marathon), here for the next three days for a painting workshop. I figure in case the whole running thing doesn’t work out, I need some backup hobbies.

Flipped through the September (it’s not even August yet?) Runner’s World at DFW today and saw the new version of my running shoes.  I’m on my fourth pair of Nike Air Pegasus 26’s and they feature the 27’s as the Best Runner’s Buy for the Cushioned-Neutral category.  They also review the new LunarGlide 2’s. I am totally not fast enough to wear these shoes but they look awesome. There is a big section about running with your dog and they feature some shoes by Granite Gear that I will have to show Wolfgang when I get back.

Ok so I just signed up for the Heels and Hills and Him Half Marathon in Las Colinas September 26th.  The course basically runs through a huge park that reminds me of Rudman but with wider trails.  There are a few hills but not bad at all, if you are used to running in Tyler you would be fine.  It is the same course as the Wounded Warrior half that I ran in June and I really enjoyed it. Totally excited about the fact that my name will be on my bib!

Congrats to Annika, Clay, and Ben who raced last weekend.  And good luck to Monty who is racing in Waco this weekend!

Also racing this weekend are Meb Keflezighi and Ryan Hall in the Bix 7, should be interesting.  Anyone want to guess who wins???  I met Ryan in April and we are pretty much BFFs now so I am rooting for him to win.  Meb and Ryan both Twitter regularly if you want to follow them for some inspiration:

  1. Hey, I did the Bix last weekend. My third time, but since I was injured, I only walked it this time.

1. you tell how old your shoes are by how many miles are on them

2. you spend more time researching running routes than local restaurants when traveling to a new city.

3. you know where exactly one mile from your front door is (in any direction).

4. you get jealous when you’re driving in your car and pass runners.

5. you’re excited for your next birthday because it means you’ll be in a new age group at races.

6. you get upset about injuries because they keep you from running, not because you have actually damaged your body.

7. your non-running friends consider every race you run a ‘marathon.’

8. you can add up miles and meters in your head, any other math you need a calculator.

9. you get an invitation to a wedding and you automatically think about what race the date will conflict with.

This website has taken on a definite gender bias.
Therefore I will continue to bring up gross and immature topics so the male perspective is represented.

    12. Mid run, you had to rip up the old race shirt
you were wearing and use it as TP

    13. You frequently watch the video of Steve
Prefontaine running in Munich and hope that
somehow this time it will end differently.

I love to make Green Monster smoothies and wanted to share the recipe:

Ingredients
1 cup almond milk
1 banana
2 or 3 cups of spinach
two handfuls of ice

Put all the ingredients in the blender and mix on high.

You cannot taste the spinach I promise! You will have to try it before you believe me.  They are so yummy and give you a ton of energy. Almond milk is found on the shelf at Brookshire’s, Wal-Mart, or Drug Emporium, it’s not in the cold milk section. Sometimes I change it up by using strawberry or chocolate milk, adding frozen cherries or blueberries, adding protein powder, or adding peanut butter.  Also if you unpeel and break the banana up in pieces and freeze it beforehand they taste even better.

So if your wondering where I got my Popeye-like muscles now you know.

  1. Such a tempting ‘baby poo’ color :)

  2.  Robert says:

Sorry, almond milk gives me diarrhea. Talk about a “Green Monster”. If I drank that thing, I’d be in the bathroom for a week.

  3. you can use regular milk robert

  4.  Robert says:

No, I am lactose intolerant. Drink anything with milk and I have terrible cramps and gas.
One year I drank a glass of milk the night before the Whiterock marathon. I sounded like a lawnmower for about 18 miles.

  5. i really hate to keep this going but the almond milk i have says lactose free and non-dairy

  6. Hmmm, I wonder if this will be at our next Striders happy hour!! Maybe some nice, bright, cancer-causing red food dye would help things out….

  7.  lroquemore says:

My husband, a friend and I tried this last night. We went with the original receipe first and it was too bland for us then we added honey and it was really good.

    Thanks for sharing Katie!

  8. ooh yum good idea!

Anyone can run a half but only SERIOUS runners can run one in the middle of August in Texas!  Actually I’m getting out easy and running the 10k… John Hanc, an editor from Runner’s World is running in the race (I wonder how fast he is? I guess we’ll see) to get tips on hot weather running for an upcoming article. Also they are doing finisher’s medals for both the 10k and the Half (no excuse not to place in your AG, IMO though) Anyways, go sign up – NOW!!! Race entry goes up August 9th and you don’t wanna give Mellew more money than you have to right? I am challenging myself to up my mileage starting this week so that I can have a good race.

  1. I signed up for the 10k as well, but after my poor showing in the Too Hot this weekend I may need to retire early, but instead I think I need to step up training a couple of notches also.. all you seasoned vets out there please tell me what I’m doing wrong. This weekend was 38:42 and I think my last 5k was around 35 (although it was a lot cooler at that one).. kinda feel like I’m going backwards here! I got punked by a bunch of 8 yr olds this weekend!

  2.  lroquemore says:

Hey Katie…I saw this article and thought this might be you in a year or two :) This lady did 50 marathons in all 50 states in 3 years.

  3. wow that is really impressive! check out Steph’s 50 Marathon Challenge, http://50marathonchallenge.blogspot.com she is attempting to be the youngest female to run a marathon in all 50 states (I think she is 24)

  4.  lroquemore says:

That’s really awesome! I think it is a really awesome goal but I have to complete my first full before I can even imagine it for myself! You, on the other hand, are the super “member of the year” this could totally be within your reach. :)

I think we had a record number of females this morning.  Usually we are so outnumbered on Sundays.

We have over 500 fans on Facebook yay!

Good luck to Shari and Royce who are running in the Too Hot To Handle 5k and 15k tomorrow in Dallas!

I got a flyer in the mail yesterday for the Chandler 5k.  To my knowledge they don’t have online registration so if you want to early register you can print out the registration form/wavier and release and mail it in.  The race is August 21st.

  3.  Robert says:

    Tricia,

Haven’t you run a couple Saturdays with us? I think you have met me. I am just kind of non-memorable.

  4. Got it – Thanks I’m registered for the Hottest Half 10k the weekend before and the Too Hot to Handle 5k this weekend… Hopefully one of these days I’ll actually be a runner :)

  5. I’m doing the Hottest Half 10k too – good luck this weekend!

  6. Thanks :)

  7. Anybody else doing the Too Hot to Handle this weekend?

Long hill repeats was the agenda tonight.  Heat index was high but we got ‘er done!  Then to Buffalo Wild Wings to celebrate Beth’s 21st birthday and some TdF action on the big screen.  Happy birthday Beth!

My August issue of Runner’s World finally came in the mail today (I saw it out already last week at Walgreen’s…).  This month’s issue is the Half-Marathon Special.  Inside there is a training plan for a sub-2 hour half and then different sections for breaking 1:30, 1:45, 2:00, 2:15, and 2:30.

The 33rd annual Badwater Ultramarathon started today in Death Valley.  The course is 135 miles with 13,000 feet of elevation gain and typical temperatures of 125 degrees.  Can’t say that I wish I was there.  Follow it on Twitter, http://twitter.com/adventurecorps and maybe your next run will seem a lot easier.

Inside Texas Running is magazine covering the Texas running scene.  They have offered us a group rate on a subscription through their ‘Insider Club.’   We would need 12 members to sign up for a discounted subscription at $8.00 each.  In return they would post our East Texas Striders events in their magazine and on their website and list our club on their directory page.  If you think you might be interested in a subscription please tell Grant or email him at gespencer38@aol.com.

The race was highly unorganized but running on the beach was amazing and totally made up for it. I ran the 10k and got sixth overall female. Kate and Kerrill dominated the 5k! Kate got third overall female and Kerrill first. They didn’t do age group awards but Kerrill got a fat gift certificate to Fit 2 Run, a running store that put on the race.
