So college football is over, basketball and hockey are in full swing and all runners are looking longingly to the Texas Independence Relay.  This is a twelve person 204 mile relay in which each leg averages about five miles.  Each runner will run 3 or 4 legs over twenty four to twenty six hours.

The East Texas Striders have run this race in each of its five years and this year we are hoping to enter a mixed team.  We will have two vans to  travel between legs, switch out in, sleep in and generally have one of the greatest times you will ever have running.

There are two things that keep people from running the relay. One is the timeline. We will leave Tyler in two vans on early Friday afternoon on the 30th of March and return late afternoon on the 1st of April.  The other thing is the cost.  This year it is estimated that the race will cost each member $190. As last year we are offering a free entry to anyone that can get a van and a full tank of gas for the departure on the 30th.  We will need two vans or we will have to rent them.

All entry fees, gas and lodging is included in the cost but meals are additional and are on your own during the race.  Many of the little towns along the way have restaurants or festivals to purchase food and of course there are convenience stores and fast food places along the way too.

If you are interested, please check out their website at: www.texasindependencerelay.com and then let me know. I would like to have the team set and money collected by the end of January.  Thank you and Happy New Year, Kevin.

Don’t miss out on this adventure. The team is limited to 12. You will never have more fun running. If this experience is not on your bucket list it should be.

  2.  Keith Riley says:

I am very interested if these is still room. I may have one other buddy who wants to run also. Please contact me if yall still need legs. Thanks

  3. Could this be the year for two teams ?!!

  4. Keith, at this time we have all the male runners we need for the relay. However, we still need a one more female. If you know of anyone please have them contact one of us through the website or facebook. There is always a chance we will have a cancellation as we near the race so keep posted if you are interested. Thanks

  5. Why don’t you get one of the guys to run in “drag” and that takes care of the problem.
You have the legs to pull it off Kevin.

  6. Hey guys, we had a drop out today. We need a male runner to join us in the TIR. Please check it out and let me know. Thanks

  7.  wuzhuang007 says:

I will run for another team. That team is really weak and won’t even finish.

Can I take a ride in your Van from Tyler to the start town? Thanks

  8. Dear Mr.wuzhuang. You are more than welcome to ride with us slow people. Just remember to bring 190 bucks .

  9.  wuzhuang007 says:

Dear Kevin, I know it is inappropriate. I want to run for a Chinese team, not our Strider team. Can I pay $190 to ride&lodge with this team, but run for a “rival” team?

  10.  wuzhuang007 says:

It’s possible that our team will DNF or hours later than Strider. It’s OK for me to take Greyhound bus to come back to Tyler.

  11. Will the last person to leave please pull the plug?
    Thanks!

  2. Rudolph, hey great to hear from you. Where the heck have you been? This website needs your comic edge.

  3. Rudolph has been working his little red nose off!

You are the only one that appreciates my attempts at humor so I have taken my act elsewhere. Merry Christmas Kevin!

  4. Rudolph, you get back to the Striders website. No one is participating since you quit your wit. This is not a request you shiny nosed freak. If you do this you will go down in history….Like Columbus.

  5.  Rudolph says:

    Ok Santa. If you insist.

We’re not gonna take it, never did and never will!

  12.  Eamonn Coghlan says:

Is this an “Irish Spring” commercial or a real race?

  13. I always enjoy the “looking good ” at mile marker 1 with only 25 to go.

  14.  Robert says:

My favoirte sign was this encouraging message I saw at a White Rock Marathon:

John Taylor predicted finishing time December 6th ( The race was held on Dec 5th).

  15. In my younger days, while warming up before a race a lady told me I was going to wear myself out before the race with all of that running.

Hot Potato Trot Trail Run 2011 — CANCELLED
Saturday, October 29, 2011 Start Time: 8:00 am Location: Tyler State Park , Tyler, Texas
To date, we have 14 paid registrants. We have 11 more unpaid registrants, which brings the total to 25. Due to fixed costs, this event must have 45 paid registrants by October 8, 2011, so…
We regret that we have had little success with trail runs, which is funny, but we keep trying!

  2. Way to go ladies!!!!!! So proud of all of you! :)

  3. Chicagopalooza! Super deluxe accomplishment. Bet you made the entire front cover of Chicago Tribune.

  4. Major kudos to Nathan Atkinson, Chelsea Nooney and Clay Emge who all smoked the Tyler half. They were running so fast they didn’t even notice the hills!

  5. Although I haven’t smoked anyone in a few years, it is still pretty nice to take first place in my AG.

Witches grab your brooms, Goblins grab your pumpkin heads, Mouseketeers grab your ears and runners grab your shoes.  The First Annual East Texas Striders Four Mile Halloween Costume Party Run , you can call it the TFAESFMHCP or Halloween run whichever you find easier, is all set. We will meet Thursday  evening October 27th at 6:00 at the Hollytree parking lot.  TFAESTFMHCPR encourages everyone to wear a costume but it is not required.  Please remember, though, to wear reflective clothing, white clothing, a head lamp or carry a flashlight because safety is our main concern.

We will be running as a pack at a pace everyone can enjoy, brooms will be left at the parking lot. Without them it is expected that our costumes may slow us down some.  The purpose is to enjoy our favorite sport and celebrate the change of seasons while dressing as our alter egos or something even scarier.

This free fun run is open to all, members and non-members, so please spread the word. Facebook it. Twitter it. Anything else you can do on your computer machines.  It should be a blast. So come on out  and party with us at TFAESTFMHCPR .  BOO!

  2. Does everyone know about this upcoming 5k/15k in Tyler???

    http://www.steelsports.net/events.aspx?id=340&type=3

  3. It is going to be hot and humid in Tyler tomorrow morning. We all need to hydrate frequently and slow down.

  4. Beth I ran that 15K last year it was really fun, but I just checked their website and it looks like it got cancelled.

  5.  Lori adams says:

Are we still having the run oct 27th?

  6. yep

  7. Just found out the Dallas Running Club is using the name Trek of Treat 5k. Kinda catchy but not nearly as cool as TFAETSFAHFMCR…XYZ. See you all on the 27th. Be cool …dress dorky!

  3. I start at 6; get up with the chickens.

  4. Best running movie ever is “Running Brave” starring Robbie Benson as Billy Mills. The worst running movie ever, a piece of trash with the creative title “Running” with Michael Douglas. Anyone else want to play?

  5.  Robert says:

They should re-do Running Brave with a bigger budget and a better actor. I can’t stand Robby Benson and the movie was hokie. You can see the yard markers for the football field when they are supposed to be running at the Tokyo Olympics.

Billy Mills is the greatest running story ever. Its a damn shame runners younger than us have no idea who he is.

Endurance is good, so is Without Limits.

Pre is in the same catagory as Running Brave-lame.

Running is bad. Also bad is The Games with Ryan O’Neil.

  6. I’m pretty sure they played football in Tokyo in the 60′s cuase for my 5th birthday in 1962 I got an electric football game and it clearly said “Made in Japan” on the box! The two differnt Pre movies confuse me. One was good and the other was on par with the Michael Douglas movie whose name I will not say.

Most runners agree that this is the beginning of the best running season of the year and not just because college football is here. The temperatures are finally dropping, winds are turning north and rain is hopefully on its way. Fall is the time when all former high school and college runners are reminded of the greatest and most beautiful sport of all, cross country. So to help celebrate this time of year we will be having a costumed Halloween run.

This is a non-competitive fun run at a pace everyone can enjoy. We will run at night, in costumes and scare as many people as we can. Unfortunately, we will have to forgo the ding dong ditch contest this year.

To help ensure safety, everyone is encouraged to either carry a flash light, wear a head lamp or wear bright clothing. Toilet paper and soap bars are optional. We’ll go about 4 miles, run as a pack and again the pace is meant to be enjoyed by everyone, even slow moving Ninja Turtles.

We are currently looking at the evening of Thursday Oct 27th. Unless, of course, my prayers are answered and the Rangers have a world series game that night. We are encouraging all runners, members and non-members, so please spread the word and keep watching the website for further details.

This sounds like a great idea and should be lots of fun, but if anyone steps on another dog or a black cat, as the case may be with Halloween, I will be notifying PETA.

  2. We’re working on that issue and hope to have it cleared up in time for the run. Thanks.

  3. Okay so its gonna be too hot to wear our Striders shirts in the Chandler 5k this weekend but I think we should all bring them to wear for the post race b.s. session. If we pretend we are having fun and act like we like each other maybe we can get some new members.

  4.  Robert says:

The “Nebraska Flash” is going to be there!? I am sure you can recruit some new members.

  5.  Alberto Salazar says:

It should only be around 92 degrees at the start.
I think it would be a good idea to wear a Striders
hooded sweatshirt in the race. Also, remember to wear your knee high wool socks.

  6. Im not sure I can pretend to like you Alberto.

  7.  Alberto Salazar says:

No problem. Dick Beardsley doesn’t like me either.

  8. Am I the only one who didn’t know that Track and Field’s “Mr Clean” of the 80s, Carl Lewis, supposedly tested positive several times for steroids and the USOC refused to release the info cause he was such a big name….Is nothing sacred or am I just doomed to forever being a naive midwesterner?

  11. Hey everybody, there was some discussion this morning about a costume run for Halloween similar to our Christmas light run. This is a fun run at a pace everyone can enjoy. The purpose is simply to have fun. Please respond and let me know if there is much interest. I am thinking Thursday Oct 27 in the evening. Thanks

  12. Here’s a really fun-sounding run, that involves chocolate. Or, if you’re not a big chocolate fan, run it for the jacket. http://www.hotchocolate15k.com/dallas/
